About the Program

The English Language Program at Saginaw Valley State University offers full-time, intensive English language training for students who need to improve English language ability.  English Language Program (ELP) courses are designed to prepare students for enrolling in academic courses and prepare students for the TOEFLŪ exam, as well as general English use.  ELP students receive academic and personal advisement and full use of SVSU's campus facilities.

Summer programs involve weekly trips to local areas as well as tourist sites such as Chicago, Mackinac Island, Frankenmuth and Niagra Falls.

The ELP Features:

  • 24 Class Hours per Week
  • 15 Students Maximum per Class
  • 6 Intakes per Year
  • Professional Faculty
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Conversation Partners
  • Institutional TOEFLŪ Test

Courses are taught by qualified and experienced English language instructors who hold Master's degrees.  The English Language Program (ELP) offers four levels of instruction (beginner, low intermediate, high intermediate, and advanced) in the following subject areas:

          Listening and Speaking (8 hours/week)
          Reading and Writing (8 hours/week)
          Grammar & Usage (8 hours/week)
Friday Workshops (2 hours/week on Pronunciation, Culture, TOEFL, etc.)

In addition, students use SVSU's language laboratory and ELP computer laboratory facilities during class sessions and associated lab times.  Classes meet Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 3:50 pm.  Classes are small (maximum class size is 15 students) and faculty members are available after class to assist with individual needs.

Language learning does not occur in the classroom alone.  Students practice English throughout the campus.  ELP students have full access to all the University facilities, including the library, the Ryder Physical Education Center, the Student Health Center, and all student organizations and activities.  Summer ELP programs include biweekly trips to local areas of interest and optional trips to Chicago, Toronto and Niagara Falls.

On Arrival to SVSU:

ELP staff will meet you at the MBS (Saginaw, Michigan) Airport and assist your settling in housing.  ELP staff also assists students with opening bank accounts, shopping, and orientation to the SVSU and Saginaw communities.
